The David Orlowsky Trio is the 2008 ECHO Classical Prizewinner in the category “Classical without Boundaries.” The musicians received this award for their highly-calibred and innovative CD-debut Noema, which appeared on SONY CLASSICAL in 2007.

David Orlowsky counts among the most extraordinary clarinettists of his generation. Together with bassist and composer Florian Dohrmann, he founded the David Orlowsky Trio in 1997, that now also features Jens-Uwe Popp on the guitar. The distinctive sound of the Ensemble is especially influenced by the compositions of Orlowsky and Dohrmann.

The ECHO Classical category “Classical without Boundaries” is an outstanding fit for the David Orlowsky Trio; the young musicians represent a highly cultivated and progressive style of music, which they title “chamber.world.music”. The ensemble takes what is often generically described as “world-music”, and elevates it to a level of consummate Art-music, in which realm the trio feels consciously committed to the highest international standards of chamber music.

The musicians have defined new horizons, connecting folkloric clarity with harmonic and rhythmic complexity, thereby creating a soundscape of unmistakeable richness in colour. The empassioning result – already critically reviewed as “musical emotionality in its purest form” – brings the David Orlowsky Trio to regularly sold-out concert halls, thrilled reviews, and a steadily increasing following both at home and abroad.

The David Orlowsky Trio has performed at the major festivals, including the Lucerne Festival, the Schleswig-Holstein and the Rheingau music festivals, as well as the “Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele”. The trio was nominated for German Record Critic’s Award, and is now one of the ensembles leading the direction of new world music.
 


david orlowsky, born in Tuebingen, Germany in 1981, began his study of music at the age of 10 as a percussionist and only three years later started studying the clarinet. In 1997 he took a course given by Giora Feidman who was so enthused by the talent of the young clarinetist that he appeared jointly with him in several subsequent performances. David Orlowsky has won several national prizes in the young musicians competition “Jugend musiziert.” He has been on numerous concert tours in Scotland, Portugal, South Africa and elsewhere with various ensembles.

He studied under Rudolf Mauz, Joerg Widmann and Eddie Daniels, worked with artists such as Gidon Kremer and Marcia Haydee, and appeared at such important festivals as the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Lucerne Festival and Gidon Kremer’s legendary Lockenhaus Festival. He studied classical clarinet under Prof. Manfred Lindner at the Folkwang Academy in Essen and since January 2008 under Charles Neidich at the Manhattan School of Music in New York.

jens-uwe popp, born in 1967 in Rendsburg, Germany, studied guitar in Hamburg and won numerous prizes in international chamber music competitions. He has played with many well-known artists such as Efim Jourist, Ulrich Tukur and Christiane Edinger and has been a long-standing member of the Giora Feidman trio.

Along with the well-known German mandolinist Jochen Ross he published the CD collections “Zeitpunkte” and “The Ten Islands” of contemporary and Scottish music. Since 2005 he has been a member, along with Florian Dohrmann, of the “David Orlowsky Trio”.

florian dohrmann, born in 1972 in Tuebingen, Germany, studied contrabass with Prof. Thomas Stabenow in the field of jazz at the Music Academy of Stuttgart. The main focus of his work has always been chamber music ensemble work playing his own compositions. Even before starting his formal studies he founded his own ensembles with which he implemented his own musical ideas, published recordings of his own material and played all over Europe.
In 2004 a selection of his own compositions was published by Advance Music as part of the music book “Klezmania”.
